Casey's Story...and a Reflection on 5 Years

Happy Labor Day!

This photo is from 5 years ago.

As we look forward, towards our 10-Year Celebration it's nice to look back to see what got us to where we are today.

7 of the people in the picture below are still members.
7 people in the picture below are still taking classes with Jodi and Amanda.
7 people in the picture below are still trusting us with their health and wellness.

This is why we wanted to share a story from Casey, one of our longest standing members.

He used to come to workouts with his girlfriend.

Now they are married, and their children are old enough to join us for classes.

In between those two seasons of his life, he got a little busy, took a break, but is now back with motivation and new goals.

We hope you like it!

In December 2021, I found myself struggling to fit into my ski gear for the upcoming season. My pants and jacket were uncomfortably tight, and on top of that, I had just healed from a neck and shoulder injury that occurred from sleeping wrong. It was a wake-up call that I needed to take better care of myself. I had two options: buy new ski gear or take action to get better. After some quick contemplation, I decided to try the latter and join a gym.

I started by doing some research on local gyms in my area, and came across Planet Fitness. I reached out to them about training but never heard back. I considered a few other options, but wasn't impressed with their web presence or other factors. That's when I remembered Pittsburgh FIT, even though it was a bit further away from my location.

I submitted an inquiry through their website, and was pleasantly surprised to receive a prompt response from Anthony and we set up a time to chat.

During our conversation, I didn't expect Anthony to challenge me to change some of my habits, especially my daily drinking. While I knew I was drinking too much, I didn't want to change. Anthony suggested I try quitting for just January, and I was resistant. He then proposed limiting my drinking to weekends only, and I agreed to the challenge. I have upheld this habit ever since.

I started going to Pittsburgh FIT five days a week, and it wasn't long before I began to notice significant improvements in my physical health and stamina. I had very little experience with weights or strength training prior to joining, but with the coach’s guidance and encouragement, I began to make progress towards my goals.

My initial goals were: first, to get in better shape for skiing and mountain biking; second, to stop destructive habits like excessive drinking and eating poorly; and third, to inspire others in my circle of influence to make better health choices.

To give some context about my professional circle of influence, I run a cabinet manufacturing company with 22 employees, and I have seen positive changes in some of them since I started my health journey. One employee even signed up for a 100-mile mountain bike race, which I believe could be attributed to our new health-focused approach at work.

Re-joining Pittsburgh FIT has been an excellent decision for me and a significant paradigm shift. I am grateful for the habits, physical fitness, and friendships that have formed as a result. My physical stamina and strength are better than ever, and I am excited to see where this journey takes me next.
