Strength, Spirit, and PRs Special Olympics Powerlifting at Pitt

This past weekend, our Special Olympics powerlifting team had the chance to compete at one of the most exciting events of the year—the annual powerlifting meet hosted at the University of Pittsburgh’s football training facility. It’s a day packed with cheering crowds, big lifts, and even bigger energy—and our athletes showed up ready to rise to the challenge.

Each year, Pitt football players take the lead in running the event, coaching teams, and creating an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. This year, our crew was coached by Coach Corey, with support from Coach Geremy and dedicated volunteer Emma.

Our athletes absolutely crushed it. Maria, Kam, Shawn, and Carter each brought home three gold medals. Luke walked away with three silvers, and Kieran earned three bronze. Even better? Almost every lifter hit a new personal record:

  • Shawn: Back Squat & Deadlift
  • Kieran: Bench Press
  • Carter: Bench Press
  • Luke: Back Squat & Deadlift
  • Maria: Back Squat, Bench Press & Deadlift

Every Friday at 5PM, this group trains together at Pittsburgh FIT. They’ve been with us for years—lifting heavy, cheering each other on, and preparing for events like this (they compete three times annually, including a championship meet at Villanova University).

These competitions are more than just numbers on a bar. They’re a celebration of confidence, community, and inclusion. At Pittsburgh FIT, we’re proud to support Special Olympics athletes and champion a healthier, stronger Pittsburgh for everyone—especially those who are often overlooked.

To our athletes: You inspire us. And to everyone else? We dare you to match their hype next Friday.

Good luck!
