Warm Ups are Essential

A warm-up is the lynchpin of your strength and conditioning program. You may be asking how is that possible when the lifts are what make you stronger and the workout is what makes you fitter. The warmup primes your body for the movements ahead. If the muscles are not working properly or firing in their full range of motion injury risk increases. If you injure yourself during one of the larger movements you will not be able to workout for some period of time losing alot of what you may have gained. Warmups can also help aid in strength, endurance and stability which will further your fitness goals. How should I warm up? That’s a great question. At Pittsburgh FIT, we have a simple schema that anyone can follow.

  1. Full Body Low Impact CardioRower, Bike, Jogging, Ski
  2. Stabilizing Muscle PrimerScap Push Ups, P/A Hangs, Lateral Band Steps)
  3. Bilateral Multi-Joint Bodyweight MovementsSquats, Push Ups, Sit Ups
  4. Movement Specific PrimerBreaking down the movement you’re doing in the workout into smaller parts

So the next time you see a warmup on the board do not rush through it instead be methodical, think about what you are doing, take your time and your fitness will thank you! Isaac Callihan
