What Actually Happens at a Free Intro at Pittsburgh FIT?

What Actually Happens at a Free Intro at Pittsburgh FIT?

The reason most people do not book a free intro is not the price, because there is not one. It is that they do not know what they are walking into, and the imagined version is worse than the real one.

A free intro at Pittsburgh FIT is a 45 minute conversation, not a workout. You sit down with a coach at 210 Thomas St, talk through your goals, your history, and your actual schedule, and leave with a specific recommendation. There is no fitness test, no weigh-in, and no obligation to sign anything before you go.

Here is the whole thing, start to finish, so you can decide with real information.

What actually happens during the 45 minutes?

You sit down and a coach asks you questions. That is genuinely most of it.

The conversation covers what you want to be different, what you have tried before, what worked and what fell apart, any injuries or pain you are working around, and what your week actually looks like rather than what you wish it looked like. The schedule part matters more than people expect, because a plan that ignores your Tuesdays is a plan you will abandon in October.

Toward the end, the coach tells you what they would recommend and why. Sometimes that is personal training. Sometimes it is semi-private or group. Occasionally the honest answer is that you do not need us right now, and we say so.

Will I have to work out or get weighed?

No to both. You will not exercise, you will not be timed, you will not step on a scale, and nobody is going to take photos of you.

This is the single most common fear and it comes up in nearly every intro we run. The worry is some version of walking into a gym full of fit strangers and being asked to demonstrate how out of shape you are. That is not what this is. You can come in work clothes directly from the office and never touch a piece of equipment.

If you do want to see the space, a coach will walk you through it. That is optional and takes about five minutes.

Is this just a sales pitch with extra steps?

There is a recommendation at the end, so it would be dishonest to say no. But the shape of it is probably not what you are bracing for.

There is no pressure to decide in the room, no limited-time offer, and no follow-up campaign designed to wear you down. The recommendation is specific to what you said in the conversation, which is why the conversation comes first. A coach who has not asked about your bad shoulder or your travel schedule cannot recommend anything worth paying for.

The reason we do it this way is straightforward. Our longest-tenured members average over four years. Nobody stays four years because they got talked into something in a room. They stay because the thing they were prescribed actually fit.

What if I am completely out of shape right now?

Then you are exactly who this is designed for, and you will be less unusual here than you think.

Pittsburgh FIT sits at 210 Thomas St on the Wilkinsburg edge of Pittsburgh's East End, and a large share of the people who walk through that door have not trained seriously in five or ten years. One of our personal training clients started squatting a 35 pound kettlebell and now squats 215 pounds for reps. Another started deadlifting 75 pounds with Coach Corey and pulls 215 two years later.

Those are the actual starting points. Nobody arrives fit. That is the point of arriving.

We have also been an LGBTQ+ affirming gym since the day we opened, which we wrote about in An LGBTQ+ Affirming Gym in Pittsburgh, Since Day One. If part of your hesitation is whether you will be comfortable in the room, that is a fair thing to ask about directly and we will answer it directly.

What should I bring, and what happens afterward?

Bring your calendar. That is the only genuinely useful thing.

Wear whatever you are already wearing. If you have relevant medical history or a physical therapy report, mention it, but you do not need to prepare anything or fill out a form in advance.

Afterward, you either start or you do not. If you want to think it over, you leave with a clear recommendation and no one chases you. If you want to begin, a coach will match you to an open slot. Right now that includes personal training at 6am and 8am on Mondays and Wednesdays and 6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with Gianfranco or with Ivan.

If you are still weighing whether coaching is worth it at all, Part 2 of our current series answers that honestly, including when it is not.

FAQ

How long does a free intro take?About 45 minutes from start to finish. That includes the conversation about your goals, history, and schedule, plus an optional five minute walk through the space. You can book it before work, over lunch, or in the evening depending on coach availability.

Do I need to be in shape to book a free intro? No. Most people who book have not trained consistently in years, and several of our long-term clients started barely able to move a light kettlebell. The intro exists to find your actual starting point, which means arriving unfit is expected rather than a problem.

Is the free intro really free?Yes. There is no cost, no card required to book, and no obligation to purchase anything afterward. You leave with a specific recommendation whether or not you decide to start, and if coaching is not the right fit for you, a coach will say so.

Can I bring my partner or a friend to the intro?Yes, and people do this regularly, especially couples planning to train together. Let us know when you book so the coach can plan for two sets of goals and schedules. Several of our clients started because a spouse or coworker came along first.

What if I have an injury or chronic pain?Mention it during the conversation, because it directly shapes the recommendation. Coaches at Pittsburgh FIT regularly work with clients managing knee, shoulder, hip, and back issues, and several came to us specifically after repeated rounds of physical therapy stopped producing lasting change.
