Partner HYROX in Pittsburgh: How September 19 Went

Partner HYROX in Pittsburgh: How September 19 Went

We spent weeks telling people this event was for anyone curious. On Saturday morning, nineteen teams showed up and proved the point.

Pittsburgh FIT hosted a partner Half HYROX on Saturday, September 19, at 210 Thomas St in Pittsburgh's East End. Teams of two split every station at full competition weight with the running halved. Nineteen teams started and nineteen teams finished, with the fastest crossing in 50:33.

Here is how the morning went, who finished where, and where to find the photos.

What is a partner Half HYROX, briefly?

It is a full HYROX simulation shared between two people, with every station at full weight and the running cut in half.

Both partners work through the ski erg, the sleds, the burpee broad jumps, the row, the farmers carry, the sandbag lunges, and the wall balls. Nothing gets watered down except the distance. If you want the full station-by-station explanation, our plain-English guide to HYROX covers all eight, and the preview we published before the event explains the format we ran.

Who finished on the podium?

Three teams separated themselves inside a two minute window, which is closer than it sounds once you have watched a sled push at minute thirty.

First place went to Marcus and Ian in 50:33. Second went to Mike and Christina in 51:05. Third went to Isabel and Freddie in 52:31.

Here is the part worth sitting with. Every one of those six trains here four days a week. Not twice a day, not on a special program, not with any background as professional athletes. They come in, they do the work that is written, and on a Saturday in September it added up to a podium.

What did the rest of the field look like?

Loud, honestly. The back half of the field is where the morning actually lived.

Nineteen teams finished, and the noise for the last team across the line was the same as the noise for the first. Partners talked each other through sled pushes. People who had never touched a ski erg in their lives figured it out in real time with a coach next to them. Several teams were made up of two people who had met that morning, because we pair solo entrants on the day and it works better than it has any right to.

That mix of racers and first-timers on the same floor is the whole reason we run these. Nobody watched from the sidelines wondering if they belonged.

Where can I see the photos?

They are all in one album. Find your team, grab what you want, and send us anything good you took yourself.

What if I missed this one?

Then you are in the same spot most of the people on that floor were in a year ago.

Nobody on Saturday got ready for that morning in a hurry. The teams who finished strong built it in ordinary weeks of training, which is also what happened for one of our members who took second at her first individual competition that same weekend. Events are just a good excuse to have a base worth testing.

Pittsburgh FIT is at 210 Thomas St, Pittsburgh PA 15221, in the East End near the Wilkinsburg border, minutes from Regent Square, Point Breeze, and Edgewood. If the idea of a morning like this appeals to you, the first step is not a race. It is a conversation. Come say hello.

FAQ

Who won the Pittsburgh FIT partner HYROX on September 19?

Marcus and Ian finished first in 50:33, Mike and Christina took second in 51:05, and Isabel and Freddie placed third in 52:31. Nineteen teams started the event and all nineteen finished. Every team on the podium trains regularly at Pittsburgh FIT.

What is the difference between a Half HYROX and a full HYROX?

A Half HYROX keeps every station at full competition weight with all reps intact and halves the running. Teams get the complete experience of all eight stations without the full eight kilometers, which keeps the event demanding while staying achievable for people who have not trained for a race.

Do you need a partner to enter a partner HYROX?

No. Plenty of people register alone and get paired on the morning based on pace and comfort level. Several teams on September 19 were made up of two people who met that day, and they finished together like everyone else.

Do you need HYROX experience to take part in an event like this?

No. The field on September 19 included people training toward real races and people who had never used a ski erg. Coaches scale weights, swap movements, and walk both partners through every station before anyone starts.
