Does Music Actually Improve Your Workout? (And Why Country Music Has a Place)

The playlist argument is the oldest argument in any gym.

Someone wants hip-hop. Someone wants nineties rock. Someone quietly wants country and has learned not to say so out loud, because suggesting country music during a hard workout gets you looked at like you've proposed doing burpees for fun.

Here's the thing, though. There's a real body of research on music and exercise performance, it's larger than most people realize, and it turns out the country music person has a defensible case. Just not for the part of the workout you'd think.

The research is more solid than you'd expect

This isn't a fringe topic. In 2020, Terry and colleagues published a meta-analysis in Psychological Bulletin pulling together 139 studies covering roughly 3,600 participants, looking at how music affects exercise and sport across psychological, physiological, and performance outcomes.

The short version: music helps. It improves how you feel during exercise, it reduces your perception of how hard the effort is, and it produces measurable performance benefits.

That last part is worth sitting with. Music isn't just making the time pass. It's changing what your body produces.

The main mechanism is attention. Hard exercise generates a stream of unpleasant signals, and when there's nothing else competing for your attention, those signals get all of it. Music gives your brain somewhere else to go. You're still working just as hard. You just notice it less, which means you're willing to keep going.

Tempo matters, and matching it is the useful part

The practical application most people know is matching beats per minute to what you're doing. Faster music for faster work.

Higher tempo music tends to pair well with high-intensity efforts. Somewhere in the 160 to 180 range works for hard running and sprint intervals. Moderate tempos, around 130 to 150, suit longer sustained running. Around 120 fits a brisk walk.

There's a reasonably intuitive reason this works, which is that people tend to unconsciously synchronize their movement to a beat. Put on something fast and you'll find your cadence drifting up without deciding to. Put on something slow and you'll settle.

Which is why the tempo choice is genuinely strategic rather than just a matter of taste. If you're doing a twenty-minute sustained effort and you put on something at 180 beats per minute, you're actively working against yourself. You'll go out too fast, blow up around minute six, and spend the rest of the workout recovering. Something more moderate keeps you in the pace you actually want to hold.

Now, country music

Most country sits under 100 beats per minute. Most pop sits above it. So on the face of it, country looks like the wrong choice for a gym.

But here's the part that gets missed: recovery is a phase of your workout too, and it responds to entirely different music.

Karageorghis and colleagues looked at exactly this in a 2018 study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. They compared slow sedative music, fast stimulative music, and no music at all during recovery after exhausting exercise. The slow, sedative condition came out ahead. Cortisol levels tended to be lower, and participants reported more positive emotional states during recovery than with either fast music or silence.

There's another finding in there worth flagging: the effect was more pronounced in women, particularly in terms of emotional state during recovery.

And the differences between slow and fast music showed up most clearly in the later stages of recovery, after about fifteen minutes. Which means this isn't about the thirty seconds between sets. It's about the longer window afterward.

How to actually use this

During hard, short efforts: go fast. Anything you find genuinely motivating, tempo up around 160 to 180. This is where the classic gym playlist belongs and there's no reason to overthink it.

During long, sustained efforts: go moderate. Something in the 120 to 140 range will help you hold a pace rather than sprinting the first three minutes. This is the most commonly misused part of the workout, and fixing it will improve your times more than trying harder will.

Between heavy sets: this is a judgment call. Long rest periods in strength work are functionally recovery windows, and there's an argument for something calmer. But if the fast stuff is what gets you under the bar for the next set, that psychological effect is real too. Try both and notice which one has you actually starting on time.

After the workout: this is where country earns its keep, and where most people leave benefit on the table. The fifteen to thirty minutes after you finish, while you're stretching, walking to your car, or driving home, is a real window. Slower music appears to help you shift out of a stressed state faster.

Karageorghis's practical guidance for that window is worth repeating: aim for music that's neutral or relaxing, with warm instrumentation like strings or gentle piano, avoid rhythmically complex material, and stay with it for a while rather than switching after one track.

Which describes a large amount of country music fairly well.

The part that matters most

There's one more finding buried in this research that's more important than any of the tempo advice.

Slower music after exercise led people to remember the workout more positively. Not just feel better during recovery. Remember it better afterward.

That's not a small thing. How you remember a workout is a significant input into whether you go back and do another one. And since the entire game in fitness is showing up repeatedly over years, anything that makes you recall training as something you enjoyed rather than something you endured is doing real work.

So the argument for country music isn't really about performance. It's that if the drive home puts you in a good mood about what you just did, you're marginally more likely to do it again on Thursday.

Which is a better reason than winning a playlist argument, though it works for that too.
